Tony Caligagn, Broadway performer, teacher, choreographer, director, and producer brings his talent and experience to Culture Shock in the form of Salsa! His class is designed for the beginner as well as the more experienced salsa dancer. Come alone or bring a partner for a fun, fresh way to dance, exercise and have a great time. Tony is one of San Diego’s most sought after dance teachers. As a professional dancer for over 20 years, he has worked with the worlds most celebrated dance companies. Gabe Masson has a signature high-energy style, he has created a unique approach to dancing that is rigorous, expansive and sometimes mind-blowing. Based in the style of modern master Jose Limon, the class employs traditional ideas from an untraditional point of view and dares to delineate the difference between self-involved and self-determined dancing. Emphasizing “why” as more important than “how”, the mover is freed to experience dance as a metaphor for life—as an open invitation to fly.
Gabe Masson has enjoyed a 20-year career as a choreographer, performer and teacher. He has toured the world in the companies of Hannah Kahn, Rosalind Newman, Lucinda Childs and Doug Varone, as well as dancing in specific projects with various choreographers including Peter Pucci, Mark Morris and David Dorfman. Since 1989, he has choreographed over 25 pieces for repertory and university dance companies and from 1998-2001 he served as artistic director of his own company, Gabriel Masson Dance (GMDance), a national touring company.
Wilson Mendieta most recently made his Broadway debut in the revival of Man of La Mancha and has played the role of Paul in several productions of A Chorus Line. As a modern dancer, Wilson was a member of Shapiro and Smith Dance Company where he performed and taught nationally and internationally. He has set repertory works in many schools and major companies such as Alvin Ailey I &II. He has performed the works of such choreographers as Kevin Wynn, Joy Kellman, Sara and Patrick Widrig, Bill Evans, Sara Hook, Zvi Gothiner, Mark Dendy, Umoja and others. Wilson’s choreography has been commissioned for festivals in Australia, Venezuela, and the Kennedy Center in Washington DC.
